Pregnancy and Paediatric Care

Both pregnancy and birth are natural and wonderful processes, however it is normal that your body will be under new and different stresses during the course of your pregnancy, birth and beyond. With not only your own health and wellbeing to think about pregnant woman are often reluctant to take any over the counter pain relief or medication, they often turn to chiropractic care to help alleviate pains associated with pregnancy.

How can prenatal chiropractic care help?

Chiropractors work on your spine and pelvis during pregnancy to promote balanced movement and alignment. With the pelvis in a balanced state, the ligaments connected to the uterus maintain an equalised, supportive suspension for the uterus. If the pelvis is out of balance, these ligaments can become torqued and twisted, resulting in a condition known as uterine constraint. By relieving tension not only is mum more comfortable but so is baby, giving your little one more room to grow and resettle into the best position for birth. Treatment is aimed at encouraging an easier delivery for both you and your baby.

What does prenatal chiropractic care involve?

We treat lots of pregnant mums to be at Harborne Chiropractic with certain members of our team having a special interest, completing additional post graduate training. Chiropractic care in pregnancy is a safe and gentle way to promote comfort, minimise pain and support the natural birthing process. It can play an important role as mother and baby develop together by ensuring that the mothers spine and nervous system can work to it’s very best. Treatment involves specific techniques to encourage realignment of your spine and pelvis. Not only will this reduce pain but will also increase the space the baby has to move around in, encouraging your baby to settle into the best possible in-utero position.

Postnatal Chiropractic Care

Treatment of post-partum mothers is important to assess any structural changes that may have occurred during labour, and/or delivery. The increase of hormones during pregnancy softens the ligaments of the body and can frequently lead to spinal misalignment. After childbirth, the hormonal system will gradually return to its pre-pregnant state over the space of a few weeks. During this period of time, the ligaments are still loose and the spine can easily be misaligned. Birth, lifting a baby in and out of a cot and even breast feeding can cause such misalignments and pain.

We love kids of all ages! Our amazing team are always ready to help entertain so that you can relax and enjoy your treatment.

Babies and Children

What does treatment involve?

Treating babies and children involves a gentle technique called “touch and hold” where the pressure used is no more than the pressure you would want applied to your eyelid. Lizzy is experienced at treating babies having completed specific post graduate training. For babies, we do our best to allow your baby to feel relaxed and at ease during their treatment. We use a special baby bean bag that supports and moulds around your baby during treatment. For children, we take the time to explain chiropractic treatment in a friendly, fun way.

How does treatment work?

Gentle cranial-sacral and spinal techniques are used to improve the function of your child’s spine, nervous system and cranial system. Younger spines are much more flexible than in adulthood and they heal amazingly well meaning children respond to care much faster.

Does my baby need chiropractic treatment?

Even the most natural birth and start to life can result in stress to such a delicate system. Many mums have found chiropractic care to be helpful for an array of problems. A healthy spine is vital to a child’s development. Extensive pressure is placed on a babies spine during birth especially during a difficult delivery involving forceps, ventouse or even cesarean.

Children on the other hand may have multiple falls whilst learning to walk and playing. We feel it is important that children have their spine checked during development to ensure that small issues do not turn into larger issues later in life. We believe we are encouraging them to have the best start in life by making sure they are growing tall, strong, straight and healthy.

Whatever the age of your child, chiropractic care is a safe and effective therapy.
